In the Waiting: Psalm 9
For all who are crushed and harassed by those who hold power over them, God is a safe place, a stronghold, a trustworthy refuge in times of trouble. We know David, the author of Psalm 9, retreated to places of refuge when he was being chased through the wilderness. These strongholds would give David a bird’s eye view of his enemies while remaining hidden, safe and secure.
Even more than the physical safety of a high shelter, David found his greatest security in the LORD.
“I will praise YOU, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all the marvelous things YOU have done.
I will be filled with joy because of YOU.
I will sing praises to YOUR name, O Most High.” (v.1-2)
“My enemies retreated; they staggered and died when YOU appeared.” (v.3)
David rehearsed his reliance on God and proclaimed his trust in the Mighty One who would never abandon those who wait on Him.
Your situation may look dark, very dark. You may be enduring loneliness and pain like you’ve never experienced before. You may feel crushed and harassed by life. Maybe you are walking through a scary health diagnosis. Maybe you are grieving the loss of a loved one whose presence is greatly missed, especially during the holiday season. Maybe you recently lost your job and you wonder how long it will be before something opens up. Maybe you are dealing with a divorce, or you are buckling under the strain of a child who is suffering. Whatever the reasons, the darkness is overwhelming and the pressure is mounting.
Here’s another translation of Psalm 9:9-10:
“God’s a safe-house for the battered,
a sanctuary during bad times.
The moment you arrive, you relax;
you’re never sorry you knocked.” (Psalm 9:9-10 MSG)
My prayer is that you will turn your heart toward the safe-house of God and knock on the door. Go to the stronghold of Christ’s love. Get as close as you can…and then relax.
“O Christ Jesus, when all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of your presence, your love, and your strength. Help us to have perfect trust in your protecting love and strengthening power, so that nothing may frighten or worry us, for, living close to you, we shall see your hand, your purpose, your will through all things.” (St. Ignatius)
