Just Breathe

A new and disorienting experience is not something to be feared or avoided, but something to be welcomed and embraced. God stretches and shapes you the most when you are forced out of your comfort zone, no longer operating on cruise-control, uncertain of the outcome, unable to go back to the way things were. You wonder how much more you can handle.

This is normal. Just breathe.

As you endure the painful journey, you will naturally listen for comforting words. You will look for someone looking for you. You will yearn for the physicality of a loved one. And you will wonder who, if anyone, will show up for you. The same is true with God. Sometimes you will feel close. Sometimes it will feel as if you’ve been abandoned.

God is always with you. Just breathe.

Where might you experience Love’s presence? How can you return to Love’s home? The written Word. The sheer sound of silence. A morning run. A cup of coffee. The melody of a worship song. The beauty of creation. The gentle compassion and curiosity of a soul friend.

The universe is drenched in the love of God. Just breathe.

Don't clench your fists and fight against what is. Calm down, rest into it, and allow this moment to bring about something new and beautiful in you. Nurture an openness and sensitivity to God that welcomes whatever comes as an invitation to knowing God and knowing yourself more fully.

God is love and you are God’s beloved. Just breathe.

Life’s unexpected surprises are usually extremely disruptive and disorienting. May you rest in the LORD who is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. May you respond to Jesus who calls you to become an apprentice in Kingdom-living, even in the way of suffering. May you receive the Spirit who empowers you to live the life you are in fact now living. May you remain rooted in Love’s family.

The end is never really the end. Just breathe.
